2024 August 21 Fermi's 12-year All-Sky Gamma-ray Map Image Credit: NASA, DOE, Fermi LAT Collaboration; Text: Barb Mattson (U. Maryland, NASA's GSFC) Forget X-ray vision — imagine what you could see with gamma-ray vision! The featured all-sky map shows what the universe looks like to NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. Fermi sees light with energies about a billion times what the human eye can see, and the map combines 12 years of Fermi observations. The colors represent the brightness of the gamma-ray sources, with brighter sources appearing lighter in color. The prominent stripe across the middle is the central plane of our Milky Way galaxy. Most of the red and yellow dots scattered above and below the Milky Way’s plane are very distant galaxies, while most of those within the plane are nearby pulsars. The blue background that fills the image is the diffuse glow of gamma-rays from distant sources that are too dim to be detected individually. 2025 January 11 An Evening Sky Full of Planets Image Credit & Copyright: Dario Giannobile Only Mercury is missing from a Solar System parade of planets in this early evening skyscape. Rising nearly opposite the Sun, bright Mars is at the far left. The other naked-eye planets Jupiter, Saturn, and Venus, can also be spotted, with the the position of too-faint Uranus and Neptune marked near the arcing trace of the ecliptic plane. On the far right and close to the western horizon after sunset is a young crescent Moon whose surface is partly illuminated by earthshine. In the foreground of the composite panorama captured on 2 January, planet Earth is represented by Mount Etna's lower Silvestri Crater. Of course Earth's early evening skies are full of planets for the entire month of January. ❕ Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi resigns from self-driving truck startup Aurora’s board Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber, has resigned from the board of Aurora Innovation, a self-driving truck startup. His decision, effective January 2, 2025, was made to focus on his responsibilities at Uber and to reduce external commitments, with no disagreements reported with Aurora. Khosrowshahi joined Aurora's board after Uber sold its self-driving unit to the company in 2020 as part of a $400 million investment deal. Shailen Bhatt, COO for AtkinsRéalis, will replace Khosrowshahi on the board. This resignation comes shortly after Aurora's general counsel announced plans to step down.
